Tips for maintaining a positive outlook on life no matter what you are going through.
Happy International Women’s Day! This day is near and dear to my heart because of how important it is to me that we take time to celebrate the advancements women have made toward equality and the women in our lives that have made an impact on us.
Women have come a long way, however; there is still a long way to go. One important step is for women to continue to support each other. Besides my husband, father, and brother, a lot of my support in life has come from women. With that being said, a lot of my bullying has also come from women. We need to be building each other up, rather than tearing each other down. Just because another woman is successful does not mean that negates your own success. Rather, her success should be a positive moment for you too.
The women that have supported me most in life have been my mom, my maternal grandmother, and my two best friends from college. First and foremost, my mom has influenced my life greatly, as she has been the one that I have always looked up to and she is the person that got me into fashion in the first place.
When I was a child, she would always buy me fashion magazines, give me journals to sketch in (when I thought I wanted to be a designer, even though in high school I realized I could not draw to save my life! lol!), and take me shopping. Not only was her influence important in terms of my fashion obsession, but she and I have always been able to have important conversations with each other about anything. She has been by my side helping me with my health journey since day one and I cannot think of another woman that has been/is more influential in my life.
My maternal grandmother bought me my first sewing machine. I couldn’t sketch my designs, but I could sew them! She taught me how to sew and we would bond over days spent at Joann Fabrics and sewing garments.
I met my two best friends in college. The three of us had almost every class together, since we all majored in Fashion Marketing and Management. Often, we were able to work on projects together and we even put a whole fashion show on together.
They are compassionate towards my health issues and we all support each other with our careers and personal ventures. This is what women supporting women truly feels like to me, since we are happy for each other when one of us accomplishes something in life.
All these women have played a major role in my life. It is so important that women truly support other women. We also should support the young women and girls in our lives, since they truly are the future. It is vital that we set examples by being powerful, compassionate, authentic, strong, and courageous.
At one point or another we have all had to overcome obstacles, whether they be in the workplace, with health problems, and/or with relationships in our lives. Being strong and showing what we will and won’t tolerate is essential to setting an example for the girls in our life.
I am the first woman in my family to graduate from college and, currently, my full-time job is in technology (a typically male dominated field). This has shown me that it is vital for girls to see women accomplish these things and to be seen in these roles, so we can show girls that they can aspire to be and achieve whatever they want to.
Celebrate the women that have made so much progress in history, the women that have made an impact on your life, and your own accomplishments today and every day!
As always, my goal for this site and for my social channels is to continue to empower women to feel in charge of their overall well-being, which begins with feeling supported by my content and me. Follow along @emilyehardtroemeling for all the latest updates and for inspirational posts!
